The Belfry Theatre is suspending its 2019-2020 Season.

With the unprecedented nature of the COVID-19 crisis and with the health and safety of our community in mind, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our production of Michael Healey’s play, 1979 (originally scheduled to run from April 21 to May 17), as well as all programming scheduled from now to the end of May. The Belfry Theatre Society’s year-end is May 31.

Theatre has been around for thousands of years and the Belfry will return as soon as it is safe for our audiences, artists, staff and community to do so.

We will be in touch regarding tickets to any cancelled performances. Please contact us at 250-385-6815 or [email protected] if you have any further questions.

As a not-for-profit organization this decision will have a tremendous financial impact on the theatre and we are asking current ticket holders to consider donating the value of your tickets to the Belfry. We will issue you a tax receipt for the full value.

If this is not feasible, we understand and we will issue you a full refund for the value of your ticket or portion of your subscription.

We apologize for any inconvenience to those patrons who may be affected.

While reaching out to artists currently under contract and issuing payments for termination, we are also looking at offering additional compensation to lessen the impact of this closure.

We will be operating with a skeleton staff at the theatre and will continue as we would when we close each season - with weeks of maintenance and clean up. The majority of the Belfry’s staff will be working from home.

Our seasonal staff, scheduled to be with us until the end of April, will stay with us until the end of April.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. We urge you to stay safe and help one another as best you can.

Belfry 101 Update

Students enrolled in Belfry 101 - our high school program - are working remotely on their show, Belfry 101 Live, and we hope to digitally broadcast their piece. Watch our social media channels for broadcast information.

“The theater is the only institution in the world which has been dying for four thousand years and has never succumbed. It requires tough and devoted people to keep it alive.” John Steinbeck, Once There Was a War

About Belfry Theatre

The Belfry is a professional not-for-profit theatre company in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

We produce contemporary theatre from the international repertoire with an emphasis on new Canadian plays.

With love, from scratch, and with some of the country's best theatre artists, we build, rehearse and create our plays in our own home, a renovated 19th century church in Fernwood - the city's most interesting neighbourhood.
