The Belfry closes its 50th Anniversary Season with Nick Green’s award-winning play, Casey and Diana.
As human and as funny as life—and just as fragile.

Victoria, BC...From April 21 to May 17, 2026, the Belfry will present Casey and Diana by Nick Green. Directed by Michael Shamata, Casey and Diana stars Deborah Drakeford (Marjorie), Meghan Gardiner (Diana), Morgan David Jones (Thomas), Liam Ma (André), Brenda Robins (Vera), and Celine Stubel (Pauline).
“Casey” is Casey House in Toronto—Canada’s first hospice for men dying of AIDS. “Diana” is Princess Diana—who visited Casey House in 1991—and changed the world’s attitude towards the disease. Thomas has spent five months in Casey House waiting to die. Now he’s hoping he’ll live long enough to meet the Princess he idolizes.
“Casey and Diana is Powerful, Gripping, Funny, and Hopeful.” Hamilton City Magazine
Why I Chose This Play
As a gay man, I lived through this horrific time—so much fear and so little information. We heard stories of hospital staff too frightened to deliver meals to AIDS patients (which was actually the impetus behind the founding of Casey House). Thomas, in this play, reminds me of so many men who contracted this disease, facing death with a mixture of anger and sadness—and a helluva lot of snap and flair—! Michael Shamata

About Casey House
Casey House opened in 1988, in a Victorian-era house on Huntley Street, in the heart of Toronto’s “gay village.” It opened when the AIDS epidemic was at its height. Gay men—already stigmatized—were now being treated as “untouchables.” The late great June Callwood— founder of Casey House—wanted to create a sanctuary where men with AIDS could have medical care, would not be isolated and could die with dignity.
This production of Casey and Diana is supported in part by a generous gift from Elaine Montgomery & Robert Maitland.
