SPARK Festival

Belfry announces schedule for 2016 SPARK Festival

Victoria, BC...From March 11 – 26, the Belfry Theatre’s SPARK Festival will feature over 50 performances and events, including a free all-ages dance party (Hootenanny) and an interactive play reading where audience members become the actors in Innocence Lost – a play about Steven Truscott. Full descriptions and details are available at www.sparkfestival.ca.

Highlights include:

  • Nicolas Billon’s 2013 Governor General’s award-winning play, Iceland;
  • Huff, Cliff Cardinal’s powerful tale of life on the reserve;
  • The Gay Heritage Project, written and performed by Damien Atkins, Paul Dunn and Andrew Kushnir, who set out to answer the question: is there such a thing as gay heritage?
  • Betroffenheit from Vancouver’s Kidd Pivot and Electric Company Theatre, an innovative, boundary-stretching hybrid of theatre and dance. Betroffenheit is presented in partnership with Dance Victoria, at the Royal Theatre.
  • A fresh round of free miniplays from local artists Geoffrey Ewert, workingclasstheatre, Brian Linds, Lynda Raino, Rebecca Hass, Mike Lenz, Catherine Hahn, Jo Leslie, Brandy Baybutt, Laura Elvie Simons, Michael Bell and Kat Taddei;
  • The aforementioned Hootenanny featuring Brooke Maxwell & the Neighbourhood Hootenanny Time Machine Band!

“I am so excited to be presenting such an amazing array of theatre with such an astounding line-up of artists,” says Michael Shamata “These are the best of the best – alongside our own fantastic creators and performers.”

About Belfry Theatre

The Belfry is a professional not-for-profit theatre company in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

We produce contemporary theatre from the international repertoire with an emphasis on new Canadian plays.

With love, from scratch, and with some of the country's best theatre artists, we build, rehearse and create our plays in our own home, a renovated 19th century church in Fernwood - the city's most interesting neighbourhood.
