Salt Baby

A modern comedy about finding out who you really are.

Victoria, BC...From April 17 to May 13, 2018, the Belfry Theatre will present Falen Johnson’s comedy, Salt Baby. Directed by Johnson, Salt Baby stars Dakota Ray Hebert (as Salt Baby), Colin Dingwall (as Grandfather and others), Timothy L. Hill (as Dad) and Nathan Howe (as Alligator).

Salt Baby is a modern comedy about finding out who you really are. A Six Nations woman, Salt Baby’s light skin sets her apart from her relatives, both on the rez and in the city. She’s a fish out of water and, accompanied by her Caucasian boyfriend, Alligator, she’s determined to discover how she fits into her two very different worlds.

Falen Johnson on Salt Baby
“It’s funny! I know there’s a bit of a stigma out there in the world about First Nations theatre being hard and heavy and difficult, but what I wanted to do with this piece was put a mixed audience in the room and say, ‘We’re all Canada now. We’re all here. No one’s getting on a boat and going back home.’”

Falen (fay-len) is Mohawk and Tuscarora from Six Nations Grand River Territory. She is bear clan. Falen is a writer, producer, director, and actor. Her plays Salt Baby, Two Indians, and Ipperwash have played in theatres across the country. Her writing will be appearing in upcoming publications such as Granta Magazine and Brick Literary Journal. She has also been featured in The Canadian Theatre Review and on the Moth Storytelling podcast. Falen has earned TV writing credits for Urban Native Girl (APTN) and was a researcher on Colonization Road (Frog Girl Films). She co-hosts the podcast The Secret Life of Canada with co-creator Leah-Simone Bowen.
