Onegin - Book, Music & Lyrics by Veda Hille and Amiel Gladstone

“Look around, look around, look around, do you see someone worth dying for?”

Victoria, BC...From October 17 to November 8, the Belfry Theatre will present Onegin, the multi-award-winning musical by Veda Hille and Amiel Gladstone. Based on the poem by Pushkin and the opera by Tchaikovsky, Onegin is directed by Amiel Gladstone with musical direction by Veda Hille. Onegin is a co-production with the Arts Club Theatre Company in Vancouver.

Onegin stars Josh Epstein, Lauren Jackson, Alessandro Juliani, Andrew McNee, Caitriona Murphy, Meg Roe, and Andrew Wheeler with Chris Tsujiuchi (Pianist), Barry Mirochnick (Percussionist / Double Bass), and Jennifer Moersch (Cello).

“✰✰✰✰ ...a searing love story with authenticity that cuts through the song-and-dance spectacle and strikes the audience at its core.” Globe & Mail

Onegin is a lush and passionate new musical about trying to fall in love. When Onegin, a dashing but jaded aristocrat from St. Petersburg, inherits his uncle’s estate in the country, his arrival sets hearts afire and stirs the embers of jealousy. Even the reclusive young Tatyana falls hopelessly under the spell of the aloof Onegin, and professes her love for him. Will playing with lonely Russian hearts reap heartbreak or romance?

“You’re lucky to be alive right now because you get to see Onegin” The Georgia Straight

After Ami and Veda’s last piece, Do You Want What I Have Got? A Craigslist Cantata (created with Bill Richardson) toured Canada, the two wanted to create something different.

“After Craigslist Cantata - a play about disconnection - we wanted to do something about connection, something romantic. Onegin felt like the perfect piece to adapt for modern audiences because these characters’ missed opportunities show us what happens when we don’t embrace love when it comes to us” Amiel Gladstone - Co-creator / Director

Onegin won 10 Jessie Richardson Awards in Vancouver, including Outstanding Production and Direction and Outstanding Performances (from Alessandro Juliani, Meg Roe and Josh Epstein), and swept the design awards (Lighting, Set, Costume and Sound Design).
