Belfry Theatre Announces Free Fall 2020 Online Programming

Programming includes a free storytelling workshop for the IBPoC Community, play readings, storytelling events and the return of a Belfry favourite.

Victoria BC…Last Wednesday the Belfry kicked off its free Fall 2020 programming with Belfry Survival Tales featuring stories from former Artistic Directors Miles Potter and Glynis Leyshon. The evening was a great success and the video is now live - https://vimeo.com/461976552

We are now gearing up for a host of online events including a free storytelling workshop for the Indigenous, Black and People of Colour community we are co-presenting with Here Magazine, on October 17 and 18.

The workshop is free of charge and conducted by Deborah Williams — Founder of the long-running The Flame storytelling events in Vancouver and The Belfry’s edition of The Flame. Details >>

Five storytellers will be invited to participate in an online edition of The Flame on Wednesday, October 21. We have 6 spots left. To register call 250-385-6815 or email [email protected].

We’ve scheduled four online play readings:

  • Two Rooms by Mansel Robinson, starring Sarah Afful (TV - Smallville) and Brian Markinson (TV - Mad Men) on October 7 at 7pm. Details >>
  • Hannah Moscovitch’s extraordinary play, East of Berlin, performed by Aidan Guerreiro, Esmé Laidlaw, and Dawson Rutledge on November 4 at 7 pm. Details >>

  • On December 23 we will present a Belfry favourite, A Christmas Carol, with a full cast. Tom McBeath and Gerry Mackay will be reprising their roles of Ebenezer Scrooge and Jacob Marley. The show will also feature Evan Frayne, Amanda Lisman, Brian Linds, Celine Stubel, Jan Wood and Conor Wylie. Details >>

The Flame, our storytelling series where real people tell true stories, returns on October 21. Five storytellers from our free IBPoC workshop will appear in this edition. Details >>

A second evening of The Flame, this time featuring stories from theatre designers (think sets, costumes and lights and expect some wonderful insider stories), will run on November 25. Details >>

Finally, on December 9, Artistic Director Michael Shamata will sit down for an in-depth conversation with playwright and actor Marcia Johnson. Details >>

These online events are all free. Play readings and The Flame storytelling evenings start at 7 pm (PST). Video links for each event will be posted online and on our social media channels one week before each event.

About Belfry Theatre

The Belfry is a professional not-for-profit theatre company in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

We produce contemporary theatre from the international repertoire with an emphasis on new Canadian plays.

With love, from scratch, and with some of the country's best theatre artists, we build, rehearse and create our plays in our own home, a renovated 19th century church in Fernwood - the city's most interesting neighbourhood.
