Belfry Events in March

A live audio play, play readings, and the opportunity to contribute to a national play on climate change.

Victoria, BC...This month the Belfry will host a variety of events including the premiere of a live audio play, Clown Fish, a free reading of a new play, Virtual Bondage, Belfry 101 Live, and a verbatim theatre workshop (as part of the development of a national play about climate change).

A live audioplay created by renowned Sound Designer Paul Tedeschini.

One man’s journey to realize his dreams.From country mouse to city rat.Into the world of clown and the thrill of success.

Along the way, a dark passenger from his past starts to take control, bringing him face to face with not only his grief and trauma but also the luminous power of love and humility.

March 8 - 9 - Free Event

Virtual Bondage by Thembelihile Moyo

The Belfry will host two free readings of Thembelihile Moyo's new play, Virtual Bondage.

In the digital realm of modern romance, Yoliswa, a vibrant Black immigrant woman, navigates the complexities of online dating in Canada. Enter Frederick, a charming White Canadian man, whose profile sparks a virtual connection with Yoliswa.

As they embark on a journey of digital courtship, they confront cultural nuances, societal expectations, and personal biases. Despite their differences, their burgeoning relationship exceeds racial barriers, fueled by shared values and mutual respect.

Through heartfelt messages and virtual dates, Yoliswa and Frederick challenge stereotypes and embrace the beauty of love in a multicultural society, proving that their connection knows no boundaries.

Audience Advice - Virtual Bondage is intended for mature audiences only and is not suitable for individuals under the age of 18. Viewer discretion is advised.

This is a FREE EVENT, but ticket reservations are still required.

 

Saturday, March 16 - Verbatim Theatre Workshop

Joel Bernbaum is giving a one-day training workshop on verbatim theatre as part of a national Climate Change Project.

This season he will do a one-day workshop—training 20 participants in the tools of verbatim theatre.

Next season, the participants in the training workshop will conduct interviews with people in the community.

During the following season, Yvette Nolan and Joel will work with the participants to create a verbatim play about climate change.

and eventually—one national play will be created using interviews from the plays created by each of the participating theatres.

Sunday, March 24 – BMO THEATRE

BELFRY 101 LIVE!

During the March Break (March 18 – 24), Belfry 101 students will be creating a unique show from scratch, based on their responses to the content in the Belfry plays this season. Their performance of this collective creation will be presented in the BMO Studio Theatre (this is a ticketed event open to the public).

 

Tuesday, March 19

The Lehman Trilogy rehearsals - not open to the public

Rehearsals begin for The Lehman Trilogy, an epic award-winning play that chronicles the Lehman brothers' rise from shopkeepers in rural Alabama to international bankers, from obscurity to prominence, navigating the Civil War, the Great Depression, and generations of ethical dilemmas.
